So what can I do to prevent my laptop from overheating while playing minecraft? I can play countless other games on it but when it come's to minecraft it overheats every single time after a bit of playing. It's killing me because minecraft is the only game I truly enjoy wasting my hours playing. Any tips? Thank you! :D

    What Causes Overheating?

    In two words: insufficient cooling.
The reasons include dust blocking intake grills or exhaust ports, a clocked up fan, or a degenerated thermal grease (aka thermal compound) between the heat sink and the CPU.

How Can You Prevent or Fix an Overheating Laptop?

There are several hardware fixes that can cure overheating.

    1. Fix Internal Cooling

The first and most important thing you need to do when your laptop is overheating, is to clean the fan/s that provide/s cooling to the CPU and graphics card. Over time they build up layers of dust and dirt that slow them down and block flow of air. Consult your laptop’s manual or manufacturer to find out how you can open the laptop to access and clean these parts.

    2. Keep The Laptop On A Hard & Flat Surface

Most laptops suck in cooling air through their bottoms. If the laptop sits on an uneven surface like a blanket, pillow, or your lap, the flow of air into the laptop is disturbed. Subsequently, the cooling is not optimal, heat builds up, the surface becomes hot, the temperature of sucked in cooling air increases, and eventually the laptop overheats.
This scenario is easily avoided by keeping the laptop on a hard and flat surface. You can use something as simple as a tray or get a special laptop holder or lap stand.

    3. Invest In A Laptop Cooler

Laptop coolers are meant to provide additional cooling. However, getting the wrong cooler can actually make the problem worse. Before you purchase a cooler, you need to understand the flow of air into and out of your laptop.

As mentioned above, most laptops suck in air for cooling from the bottom. This makes sense because warm air rises upwards. However, a cooler that sits underneath the laptop and sucks air away from it, does not contribute to laptop cooling and rather causes a more rapid overheating.
If your laptop has intake grills at its bottom, purchase a cooler that blows cool air upwards, i.e. into the laptop. You can also get a passive cooler that does not consume power and merely absorbs heat.

To stop your laptop overheating, play it on a flat surface rather than your lap/covers/carpet etc. also try remove the dust from inside the fan

A couple things. I'm assuming you're running some version of Windows. If so, do the following:
    1. Make sure any aero is turned off (i.e turn on Vista Basic/Windows 7 basic.) This can help gain FPS in games and cool down the GPU.
    2. Download Gamebooster it's a program designed to turn off any unnecessary background programs during gaming, as well as numerous other things that can result in heavy FPS gain and less strain on your CPU/GPU.
    3. Install Optifine, a minecraft mod designed to give massive FPS boosts to Minecraft as well as making it lighter/easier to run in most cases.
    4. If you have the memory for it, create a .bat to give more memory to minecraft. To do this, open notepad and past this
      Code:
      javaw -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft.exe
      (Purely for FPS gain.)
    5. If all else fails, turn down all the extra "beauty" effects in Minecraft. Set your view distance to short or tiny, turn off smooth lighting, make sure graphics are set to fast, enable opengl, etc..
Good luck. Hope some of those fix your overheating problem.

I got a cooling pad, My laptop sits on my nightstand, I have optifine installed, I have all my minecraft settings at their lowest (I'm in it for the performance not to looks), and I just cleaned it out not even a week ago.
I'll try the few that I haven't yet and get back to ya!

    Thank you all though! :)

I download all these things to boost my performance and I put my settings on low and I turn on gamebooster and go into the game and it's running but I was watching my CPU temp. the entire time and at first without running minecraft it was around 74 Celsius, then gamebooster ran and started turning of the programs irreverent to gaming and my CPU Temp. was about 62 Celsius and then when I played minecraft I watch my temp increase about 1 degrees about ever 1-5 seconds. It got up to 93 degrees before I closed minecraft. Help? ):

@EnderZombie Maybe your drivers are out of date? A out-of-date graphics driver can cause heating/performance issues in general. Try downloading this program and update them. (I've used it before with no problems.)

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas. Maybe try installing a lighter OS/dual booting with Linux like I am. Try Ubuntu, you might like it.

If you're interested in Ubuntu, definitely give it a look. It's a lot faster than Windows in a lot of ways, plus it's very pretty. Been using it for 3 years now.

:O That doesn't look like the latest version. I have 12.04 and I must say it's an awful downgrade from the previous version.
Yes it does run a lot smoother than Windows, especially for lower end computers like mine, but you will miss out on a lot of things. For example you can't simply put a game CD into your computer and play, and .exe files do not work without third party applications, i.e. Wine, which is far from perfect.
That said, Minecraft works just fine on it and gave me a higher and more consistent FPS rate, but I still don't think that helps your overheating problem.
You could always try partition your drive and run Ubuntu as a sort of trial run, but I'd be more concerned with your actual computer's hardware.

@Snear Open a terminal and type
    Code:
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    If this returns nothing, type
    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Be sure to also install mesa-utils
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
Also, enter the following commands to upgrade to the latest xorg graphics drivers.
    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I'm really good at this stuff, been doing it for awhile now. If you have any questions just PM me/message me on Skype.

    *Edit*
Be sure to reboot after the dist-upgrade and the xorg update or you will get system hang.

While this can help performance issues, it probably won't help the overheating.

Ubuntu is the way to go. However it is very limited, and that is why, even though I am a developer, I chose Windows over Ubuntu. I had Ubuntu installed in dual-boot before, but I rarely ever used it.

    My thoughts exactly :D

How about just burning the ISO file, put the live-cd in, and run it without installation? That's one of the features about Ubuntu I love. I can launch the CD at anytime if I ever have a problem with Windows.
